When Real People Own the Media

Soon after the iPhone Apple device was released panic swept the nation. A Free the iPhone website popped up, and Congressman Ed Markey took the toy to the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet demanding justice.

I was never worried. I knew somewhere defenders of our rights to tinker would figure it out in no time. Sure enough just 7-8 weeks after the device went public a youth led group of techies proudly posted this video:

People can now use the iPhone without signing an AT&T contract, and use the wireless Web device without restrictions.

Does anyone remember the DVD Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! released by the Beastie Boys? I do. The production was driven by the fandom of
50 audience members who were given cameras to film the sold out event. Although the DVD received great reviews, and yes I saw it myself, I wasn't really impressed. I've always noticed how people get cameras by security, and nowadays just use their cellphones to capture live events.

The People's Production House got it right. They put the power of the media into the hands of people with real stories to tell. Renaissance Village is the largest FEMA trailer park housing people displaced by hurricane Katrina. People's Production House recently posted this video of the new media makers producing their own stories of life after Katrina.

If you would like to support these producers and the work of People's Productions House, you can make a donation of $50 or $100 through their secure online donation page.

What are you doing with your rights to tinker? What story would you tell if the microphone was in your hands?

Gold plated earphones by designer Anna Tascha.

I would just spray paint a cheap pair of earphones I have lying around the house.

Mikka Meets the iFish

Do you have an iFish? Mikka does. He's the oldest cat out of three residing at our house. At first Mikka and his iFish didn't get along.
The iFish wasn't a real fish, and didn't taste like tuna. He just stared at it for hours. Then as soon as he figured out how the device functioned, as all good geeks do, they were best friends.

SOS: Why I love MySpace

At 2:00AM in the morning I decided to check MySpace. Louis was asleep, and I didn't have any DVR worth watching. I had no messages, but there was this odd cry for help:
Mikey Jamn Aug 19, 2007 12:53 AM ...stranded. and i'm far from home...
"anyone from the mix, please take note. Hurricane "Dean" is coming in less than 24 hrs. my flight home on monday the 20th is cancelled. I need someone to let the mix know that i wont be able to return until wed. or thurs. our flights have been cancelled until further notice. i don't have any way to call, so if anyone can take control of the situation, that would be worthy of a free pitcher of whatever you want, or something. I'm asking for your help. please, write back. I'll check myspace tomorrow for any info. love ya, mikeyjamn"

Obviously I'm not a hero, but I sent a text message to Mikey's boss to let them know. This is much better than watching reruns, or Dateline/to catch_a predator. ¡Ya basta! with the geek jokes. I'm off to bed.

Here's a snapshot of hurrcane DEAN at the time of this posting.
